GNOME Mobile & Embedded Initiative

"The GNOME Mobile & Embedded Initiative will advance the use, development and commercialization of GNOME components as a mobile and embedded user experience platform. It brings together industry leaders, expert consultants, key developers and the community and industry organizations they represent."

I’m very pleased to see many other companies and initiatives moving towards using GNOME in consumer devices. We’ve been investing into GNOME for years and the open and even playfield that GNOME provides is serving us very well. We plan to continue strongly with GNOME and direct many of our activities through it. Our whole open source strategy relies primarily on strong upstream project participation – GNOME being a good example.

See the press release, too

"Commercialization" and "GNOME" in the same sentence makes me nervous. Given that many maemo developers feel too much of the 770/N800 software mix is proprietary, how can you allay fears that it will get worse? And is there any possibility that situation can in fact get better (for the community)?

Commercialization is needed for the success of GNOME. Really it is! So this is very good. And it is not against the community at all. So good stuff!

Ari - any idea when the "N800 Case" accessory will be shipping?

I'm getting mixed messages from online retailers suggesting the case may be cancelled. Please can you confirm it will still ship as I (and others I'm sure) need a simple case in order to protect the screen and the Nokia case looks ideal.

Also, any chance of an extended (larger capacity) batter for the N800? :)

^ batter == battery

On topic - good to see more involvement in embedded platform, hopefully offering more choice in the not too distant future.

Texrat, I can understand why "'Commercialization' and 'GNOME' in the same sentence" makes you nervous. I feel very much the same.
Still we mustn't mix up "commercial vs. non-commercial" and "free vs. proprietary". Free software can be (and quite often is) commercially exploited, and it's usually good for its development. GNOME getting the attention (and probably support/funding) of the Ferengi doesn't mean they'll change their license from free to proprietary.

I just got a data plan on my mobile. I pretty much do not need my computer anymore since I do so much with my mobile phone. The neatest thing is that I can even watch naughty movies:) It is pretty neat, it's called Mobile TV. All I do is point my phone to sexoncell.com and they have adult mobile movies in different formats like 3gp movies, symbian, pda or whatever. If you have any other cool sites, please let me know! This one, though, even has a free daily mobile movie.

There are nicotine replacement therapies available in the market, namely, nicotine gums, lozenges, patches et al that can help you overcome nicotine addiction. You can try out these therapies according to the doctor’s suggestions but they fail to yield desired results, chantix is definitely there to help you quit smoking. For more information on chantix, visit http://www.chantixmagic.com.
